I am serious martial artist and am interested only in the most functional exercises to maximize my fighting potential. One extremely important part of training for all martial artists is core training, and part of the core is the abdomen.
However, there has been a lot of controversy from various sources regarding the crunch. Some sources say it is functional and others say its non-functional as working muscles in isolation promotes unnatural movements and "distorts" natural movements patterns thus negatively affecting performance.
What are your thoughts regarding the crunch, in regard to a martial artist (a mixed martial artist)? Do you believe the crunch is functional or non-functional?

I just got a gym membership and I’m trying to get in shape. I’m doing aerobic exercises and circuit training. I’m trying to loose some belly flab, bulk up, and gain stamina.
My question is, when should I eat what, and how should I balance my exercises?
Do I start with high protein breakfast AND have a protein shake after working out? Should I have cereals instead in the morning? What if I work out in the afternoon, what should I eat, and how long before I work out? Is it ok to do aerobic and weight training in the same day? What’s a good work out schedule? (I can go everyday if I have to)
