I’ve always wondered this and it bothers me so much.

You know the ol’ energy demonstration with the loop-the-loop track and the ball, and it has to be placed at a certain height in order for it to make it around the loop. Anyways, my question also applies to anything moving in a vertical circle.

You have centripetal force with is an "inward force" and gravitation force acting on the ball. To solve the problem you set these forces equal (thus obtaining mv^2/r = mg, or, v=sqrt(r*g). Then if you want to find release height of the ramp, you solve it with energy knowing velocity, blah blah blah.

My question is. Why do you set the centripetal force (which is I assume is the normal force of the ramp on the ball) and gravitational force equal to each other? Both of these are DOWNWARD forces, with respect to the loop. So it’s not really a "balance" of forces if they are both going downwards. I’ve thought about ‘centrifugal force’ which doesn’t really exist, so… I dunno.

I know it’s a pretty minor question, but thanks for any help!!

Like, I read that you need good posture to be able to balance things while walking. For me, I just kinda put it on my head, walk normally, and it just stays on (with some effort put when it becomes off-balance).

So yeah, I was wondering if this says anything about me.

When ammonium nitrite (NH4NO2) is heated, it decomposes to give nitrogen gas. This property is used to inflate some tennis balls.
          1. Write a balanced equation for the reaction. NH4NO2 –> N2 +
          2. Calculate the quantity (in grams) of NH4NO2 needed to inflate a tennis ball to a volume of 86.2 mL at 1.2 atm and 23C.

So I’ve been working pretty hard this summer about improving my overall health. I run three and a half miles three days a week and do a forty-five minute workout on my elliptical on the days I don’t run. I also do around ten minutes of core exercise per day right when I wake up. I’ve been really focusing on reducing my calorie intake, but lately it seems like I’ve gained back a few pounds and I don’t get as much satisfaction from my workouts. I know to lose the last parts of fat sticking around I need to add strength training to my cardio workout. Any suggestions? I’ve never weight trained before, so this is all pretty new to me. Thanks!
